No Single-Player Offline Play: "Could not connect to server"

No Single-Player Offline Play: "Could not connect to server"

Postby The Diamond Geezer on 28 Aug 2011, 14:38

Hello,

I have purchased a licence and entered the auth key while online as requested. However, whenever I want to play a single-player game, I have to be connected, otherwise if I click on "Single Player"' I get a female voice saying "Error"and the following message:

"Network Error - Could not connect to the server"

I have updated to version 1.2.3, and I was under the impression that 1.2.0 introduced offline single-player mode. I have not created a multiplyaer account yet.

Please help! Thanks

Hey,

The game should not try to connect to one of our servers when you click single player. What it does do though is start a new local-only server and connect to it. It looks like it encounters an issue while doing that.

What you can try is change the Server Port (TCP) under settings (General).

If that doesn't work please attach your ConquestServer.log and Conquest.log located in Logs/ of the game's installation directory.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hey SephiRok,

Thanks for your reply. What value shall I input under TCP? Default is 1521. I left the field blank and this time I get a "Local Server" error instead of "Network Error".

I will attach ConquestServer.log and Conquest.log shortly.

Thanks!

You can try almost any number instead of 5121, for example 12808.

Do you by any chance stop your network loopback device or so? Could you please verify these commands work in the terminal (when single player doesn't work):

Code: Select all
ping 127.0.0.1
ping localhost

Hey SephiRok,

when pinging 127.0.0.1 I get

PING 127.0.0.1 (127.0.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_req=1 ttl=64 time=0.063 ms
64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_req=2 ttl=64 time=0.058 ms
64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_req=3 ttl=64 time=0.059 ms

..and so on.

When pinging localhost:

PING localhost (127.0.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from localhost (127.0.0.1): icmp_req=1 ttl=64 time=0.062 ms
64 bytes from localhost (127.0.0.1): icmp_req=2 ttl=64 time=0.057 ms
64 bytes from localhost (127.0.0.1): icmp_req=3 ttl=64 time=0.055 ms

So that looks OK to me, doesn't it?

By the way, my main OS is Linux Mint Debian and I have XP SP3 as a dual boot. This happens on both.

Thanks

That's really weird. Can you describe your network situation a bit? What's the reason for no internet connection? Do you just have no cable plugged into your PC? Is there just one LAN network adapter?

Extremely wild guess: try disabling your network adapter(s) under Windows.

I use a 3G USB dongle to connect. No network cables are connected to the central unit whatsoever.

The ping test results shown in my previous posts were conducted offline, BTW.

Have you tried temporarily disabling your network adapters or plugging the USB dongle out? If you don't do that normally.

I'm running out of ideas for workarounds. If you're willing to experiment, I'd try things such as trying the game on another PC on the same network or close-by if you have another, and similar things to track down what exactly causes it. It's definitely not something that just happens to everyone, I've had no problems during my offline tests or even playing on my MacBook on the road, and I haven't heard of any other people having issues either.

Adding some additional debugging information to the game to track it down might help, but you kinda caught us with our pants down because pushing a new live version of Conquest right now would require some annoying work and we sadly currently can't afford to redirect resources from creating the new game. Regardless, we'll try to get it running as soon as possible; we also have other updates planned for Conquest. A rough timeline would be 2-4 months.

I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

No problem SephiRok, I am not expecting a hotfix if nobody else has ever reported this ;-) Really it's not a big deal and I very much appreciate your input and support.

Besides, I am delighted to hear that an update for Conquest and a new game are in the works. I can't wait!

As for my issue, I'll post if I come up with anything.

Improvements have been done both to process management and the back-end netcode. If this issue still occurs, a paste of the log files would help in resolving it.
